Another free breakfast down it was time to check out. Straight to Hertz through the rough part of town to pick up our Chevrolet Cruze, was good until the jerk woman in her Mustang tooted us for no reason, jerk.
On to Oakland, what a rough town that looks. At least all we needed to do was head to the nearest Walmart to get some supplies, was disappointed not to see anyone fit for peopleofwalmart.com but thems the breaks. $80 got us all the food & camping supplies we needed for a trip to Yosemite.

Stevie got behind the wheel as we headed for Crane Flat, she’s a bloody windy trip up through parts unknown, then heading up the steep incline until you head into Yosemite.
We set up camp in Crane Flat at site 208 and went for a stroll to check out the lay of the land, our walk back had kids screaming and running everywhere so we went down to check out the bear wandering through the grass, it was far enough away, just keep your distance bear. We met some bloke from Louisianna, gave us his life story and we headed back to camp.

Tent went up a treat, not bad for $22. Sleeping straight on the ground has done wonders for my back, don’t think I can go back to my office chair.

Thought i’d try my hand at hitting the right side of the road. No problems here. Headed into the Yosemite Valley.

Here’s a couple of tips:
- Get there early. We got there about 8:30am, parking spot right next to the gate.
- Take plenty of water. It gets bloody hot around Midday onwards, plenty of places to fill up your bottle around the place.
- Grab yourself a bike. I don’t think we went half an hour without saying “gee the bikes were a bloody good idea”
So of course the first people we ran into out of the car park were from Tasmania, stock standard. Aussies are easy to spot because you can usually hear “reckon” from a distance. We grabbed a bike from old mate who told us they don’t allow mountain bikes as rentals, a little rough, the low riders we hired were an interesting set up. Steve’s handlebars were all over the place but we both ended up returning the bikes in one piece.
Yosemite is a sensational place, if you’re ever heading to California you have to check it out, we saw most of it in half a day with only a couple of hikes, but there are days worth of trails to check out. We were heading towards the car park when there seemed to be a bit of business going on, turns out there was a bear up ahead. The ranger held us back, given he had a massive rifle that was a great idea. The bear started charging towards some people, the ranger took off and fire a shot. We told ourselves that it was just a warning shot, but hmmm.
We thought we’d hit the road and make some distance towards Vegas before meeting up with the boys on Thursday. Motel 6 in Fresno it is, $60 for a room with 2 double beds, TV, fridge, bathroom etc. You can’t get a room in Motel Formula 1 for under $100 and it’s about 800 times shitter.
Fresno, hard to judge from what we’ve seen but it’s bloody hot. I’ll reserve further judgment until tomorrow.
